Brief intro -
My names Adam (or Barty), I'm 22 years old, and originally only wanted to come to Whistler Blackcomb to mountain bike. All that changed when I got to uni and learnt to ski on the annual trips out to the Alps. From then on I was bitten - can't stop me now!!!
I originally started this blog a month ago to keep my family informed (and friends slightly envious... ) about what I was up to whilst also hopefully helping any future Canadian seasonnaires. But now I'm restarting with a new layout and a new approach to document this next chapter. So to start, I'm going to write about why I wanted to go, how I got there, who helped me and what I'm most excited about!
New chapter, new beginning -
The idea was started summer of 2011 when a friend I was working with said she was off to Whistler Blackcomb for the 2011/2012 season. Through the next year it was torturous, watching her enjoy this amazing experience. When it came to the final exams I realised I didn't want to go straight through education into a desk job in London, I wanted to live a bit first, so I got in contact with her for some advice.
She recommended The Working Holiday Club because of her experience, so I sent off some initial questions. At this time I was still considering Europe - being part of the EU I don't need a visa, general health insurance is covered, and lots of my friends had or were heading out there. In the end I decided to be different and go out on my own adventure - and signed up to The Working Holiday Club.
After talking with Andy I was confident that this was going to work despite feeling a little out of depth initially. I've never been travelling on my own and was ultra excited and slightly nervous! With the guidance from him I managed to scrape through as one of the final ten IEC applicants in the UK, guidance was always there when I needed it and advice on the interview, flights and insurance was provided.
Slowly, one by one, this list was ticked off. I'm going to be working as a Rental Tech starting on the 5th November. It finally all came together two days ago when I paid for my insurance...it's all in place - I'm ready to go! I wouldn't have had a clue without Andy and The Working Holiday Club, so thanks for him helping me get there, I wouldn't hesitate to also recommend them to anyone wanting the Canadian experience just like my friend.
Is it the destination or how you get their?
So now I'm off to Whistler Blackcomb for six months to work as a rental tech starting November 5th. I can't wait, days are ticking by slower and slower, work is becoming less and less productive and anticipation keeps building. As I write this I'm watching Redbull's 'The Art of Flight'... it's not helping!
I'm not sure I fully agree with the saying "It's not the destination, it's how you get there". I think it's all about what you do and in the end I'm just looking forward to times of Fun, Fist-bumps and (life long) Friendships.
28th of October - the trip starts! Please like, share and follow! :)
